$5,100: average monthly agency project for social media on Clutch

As of 2026, most small businesses pay between a few hundred dollars and about $5,000 a month for social media management. Freelancers usually sit at the lower end, social media agency projects reviewed on Clutch average about $5,100 a month, and a full-time in-house manager in the US costs roughly $5,300 a month in base salary alone, before benefits and tools.

Where you land in that range depends on how many platforms you need, how much content is made for you, and whether paid ads are part of the job. This guide breaks down each option, what drives the price, and what you should expect to get at each level.

What is the average cost of social media management per month?

There is no single official price list for this work, so it helps to look at a few large data sets side by side. They do not agree perfectly, but they point in the same direction.

  • Upwork says social media management can cost anything from a few hundred dollars a month to $10,000. For small businesses working with intermediate US-based specialists, it lists account management across two channels at $400 to $2,000 a month, while enterprise accounts run $2,500 to $10,000.
  • Clutch, which collects verified client reviews of agencies, reports an average monthly cost of about $5,100 and a usual hourly rate of $25 to $49 for social media marketing agencies, though rates for US, Canadian and Australian agencies are listed far higher, at $100 to $149 an hour. UK agencies are listed at $50 to $99 an hour.
  • Upwork lists median rates of $14 to $35 an hour for social media managers hired through its platform, with specialist work such as campaign advice priced higher, at $55 to $200 an hour.

The takeaway is simple. A few hundred a month buys basic posting. Somewhere in the low thousands buys a managed service with strategy and reporting. Anything above that usually includes ads, video production or a larger team.

Agency vs freelancer vs in-house: how do the costs compare?

A freelancer usually costs a few hundred to about $2,000 a month. Agency projects reviewed on Clutch average about $5,100 a month. An in-house social media manager averages about $64,100 a year in base salary, or closer to $7,600 a month with benefits. Doing it yourself with tools is cheapest in cash, but it costs your time.

  • Freelancer: often a few hundred to around $2,000 a month, in line with Upwork's $400 to $2,000 range for managing two channels. At Upwork's median of $14 to $35 an hour, 20 hours of work a month comes to roughly $280 to $700. You get one person's skills and time, which is fine for posting and light community management, but you depend on their availability and you may need to source design, video or ads help separately.
  • Agency: social media projects reviewed on Clutch average about $5,100 a month, and most run for around a year. You get a team that can cover strategy, content, design, reporting and often paid ads, plus cover when someone is off. The trade-off is a higher fee and less day-to-day time with one dedicated person.
  • In-house hire: Indeed reports an average US base salary of about $64,100 a year for social media managers (updated June 2026), or about $5,300 a month. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics found that wages make up about 70% of total employer compensation costs in private industry, so with benefits the true cost can be closer to $7,600 a month, before software, training or a camera budget.
  • Do it yourself with tools: Buffer has a free plan for up to three channels and paid plans from $5 a month per channel at the time of writing. This is the cheapest route in cash terms, but your own hours are the real cost.

If you post a few times a week on one or two platforms, a freelancer or a lower-tier agency package is usually enough. If social media drives a meaningful share of your sales and you also run ads, an agency or an in-house hire starts to make more sense.

What drives the price of social media management?

The price mostly depends on how many platforms are managed, how much content is made for you, how quickly comments and messages are answered, and whether ads, strategy calls and reporting are included. Two quotes that look very different are often covering different amounts of work. These are the main factors that move the number.

Number of platforms

Each platform has its own formats, audience and posting rhythm. Managing Instagram and Facebook together is lighter than adding LinkedIn, TikTok and YouTube, because each extra channel needs adapted content and its own community replies. Upwork lists each extra channel at $200 to $1,500 a month for small businesses and $1,500 to $5,000 for enterprise accounts, which shows how quickly this adds up.

How much content is created for you

Scheduling posts you already have is cheap. Writing captions, designing graphics, filming and editing short videos is where most of the cost sits. Upwork lists images and graphic design at $200 to $950 a month for small businesses. Reels and short video usually cost more than static posts because of shooting and editing time.

Community management and response time

Replying to comments and messages within hours, every day, takes ongoing attention. A package that covers posting only will be cheaper than one that includes daily engagement and inbox management.

Paid ads management

Running Meta or Google ads is a separate skill, and most providers charge a management fee for it on top of organic work. Remember that the ad spend itself is a separate budget. Budgets vary widely with your goals, though some platforms let you start small. Clutch notes that Snapchat and Reddit ads have minimums of $5 a day.

Strategy, reporting and meetings

Monthly reports are standard. Live dashboards, bi-weekly or weekly strategy calls, and detailed attribution work add time, and therefore cost.

Tools and software

Someone has to pay for scheduling and analytics software. At the time of writing, Sprout Social starts at $79 per seat a month on annual billing, and Hootsuite starts at $99 per user a month on annual billing. Agencies usually include their tools in the fee. With a freelancer or in-house hire, you may pay for them yourself.

Location and experience

Rates vary a lot by country and seniority. Clutch's data shows agencies in the US, Canada and Australia charging far more per hour than the global average, and Upwork notes that more experienced professionals command higher rates.

What is included in social media management at each price level?

Most offers fall into three bands. Entry level, up to about $1,000 a month, covers one or two platforms and basic posting. Mid range, about $1,000 to $3,000, adds custom posts, some short video and community management. Full service, from $3,000 to $5,000 and above, adds more platforms, regular video, paid ads and weekly strategy.

Entry level: a few hundred to about $1,000 a month

  • One or two platforms, usually Instagram and Facebook
  • A modest number of posts each month, often using templates or your own photos
  • Basic scheduling and a simple content calendar
  • Light comment monitoring
  • A short monthly report

Mid range: about $1,000 to $3,000 a month

  • Two to three platforms
  • Custom-designed posts plus some short-form video
  • Hashtag, audience and competitor research
  • Regular community management
  • Sometimes paid ads management, with ad spend billed separately
  • Monthly or bi-weekly check-ins and clearer reporting

Full service: $3,000 to $5,000 a month and above

  • Three or more platforms with platform-specific content
  • Regular video production and higher posting volume
  • Paid ads across Meta and Google, often linked with SEO or email
  • Live dashboards, attribution and weekly strategy sessions
  • A dedicated account lead and a wider team

Is ad spend included in social media management fees?

Usually not, and you should always ask. A management fee pays for the people doing the work. Ad spend is the money that goes to Meta, Google or TikTok to show your ads. Some providers bundle a small ad budget into a package price, which can make one quote look more expensive than another when it is not. Ask every provider to show the two numbers separately.

How to avoid overpaying for social media management

To avoid overpaying, compare quotes by what they deliver rather than the headline fee. Count posts, videos, platforms and response times, ask who makes the content, check the minimum contract term and exit terms, and make sure you keep admin access to every account. These checks make very different quotes easy to compare.

  • Start with your goal. More foot traffic, online sales and brand awareness each need different work.
  • Count the deliverables. Compare quotes by posts, videos, platforms and response times, not by the headline fee.
  • Ask who makes the content. Find out whether posts are custom-made or built from templates.
  • Check the contract length. Many providers ask for a minimum term. Know your exit terms before you sign.
  • Ask how results are reported. You should see reach, engagement, clicks and, ideally, leads or sales, not just follower counts.
  • Keep ownership of your accounts. You, not the provider, should hold admin access to every page and ad account.

Frequently asked questions

How much should a small business spend on social media management?

Most small businesses spend somewhere between a few hundred dollars and about $3,000 a month on management, and Upwork puts small-business account management for two channels at $400 to $2,000 a month. Start with what you can sustain for several months, since social media results build over time. Add ad spend on top if you plan to run paid campaigns.

Is it cheaper to hire a freelancer or an agency?

A freelancer is usually cheaper on paper, often a few hundred dollars a month for basic posting. An agency costs more but covers strategy, design, video, ads and reporting with a team. If you would otherwise hire separate people for each of those, an agency can work out similar or better value.

How much does an in-house social media manager cost?

Indeed reports an average US base salary of about $64,100 a year for social media managers, as of mid-2026. Once you add benefits, which the Bureau of Labor Statistics puts at about 30% of employer compensation costs, plus software and equipment, the real cost is often well above $7,000 a month.

Do social media managers charge per post or per month?

Both exist. Many freelancers quote per post or per hour, while agencies mostly use monthly retainers based on a set number of posts and platforms. Monthly retainers are easier to budget, and per-post pricing works if you only need occasional help.

What should a basic social media package include?

At minimum, expect a content calendar, a set number of posts each month on one or two platforms, basic comment monitoring and a monthly report. If a package does not say how many posts, which platforms or how reporting works, ask before you sign.
